In a late 19th century building (where the old PIDE-DGS functioned for years) is the Military Museum of Porto. It opened to the public on March 21, 1980. The mission to preserve, study and disseminate historical-military heritage was the battle to be won in this museum. The museum exhibits, permanently, pieces of armory, military equipment, heavy artillery and tanks. It is also worth mentioning the great collection of soldiers that the museum possesses, which, by its distinction and variety, is unique in the country. Here you can find a sword of Dom Afonso Henriques, king who founded Portugal.
