Installed in the Belém area, it has the most important collection of Royal cars and carriages from the 16th to the 19th century. The museum was created in 1905 in the former Picadeiro Palácio de Belém, in Lisbon, and is divided into two buildings: the former Picadeiro do Palácio de Belém and the new building on the opposite side (on the avenue India). It gathers a unique collection in the world, of about 9 000 objects, that includes predominantly vehicles of the centuries XVI to XIX, and accessories of cavalry. It has been one of the most visited national museums in Portugal.
