This fort is a polygonal base construction, designed by Italian Tomaso Benedetti, with four ramparts at angles, prepared to receive artillery pieces and thick low wall curtains. Construction began in 1551, under the plan of Manuel Machado, but over the centuries has been changed with new additions and transformations. In the 40s of the twentieth century, the Fort now housed the headquarters of the Military Command of the Azores (Military Museum).
