Castelo de Silves 8300-117 Silves

Silves Castle is one of the most remarkable works of military architecture left by the Arabs, with over a thousand years of existence. This fortification is located at the highest point of the hill on which the city rests. It forms an irregular polygon, surrounded by a strong mud-walled wall covered with red sandstone - the sandstone of Silves, and occupies a total area of about 12,000m2. Outside, near the main entrance, you will find a sculpture representative of King D. Sancho I, who in 1189 conquered the city of Silves for the first time with the aid of the Crusaders. In summer, Silves Castle hosts various events, such as concerts, fairs of gastronomy and regional products and the already traditional Medieval Fair.
