It is located at the top of Serra do Sapoio, at about 860m altitude. In the heart of the Serra de S. Mamede Natural Park, it has maintained, exclusively, the role of the only Portuguese fortification with strategic purpose until the 19th century and is the richest with regard to the historical-military heritage. Here they fought and won battles and political struggles, making the village the defending nucleus of its external opponents for centuries. Because it is so high above, the village of Marvão is difficult to access, a great advantage in the past, as for this reason it served as protection against enemies. Here, History combines with the charm of the view of the mountains.
