The Joanina Library is the greatest exponent of Portuguese Baroque and considered one of the richest European libraries. Known as the Joanina Library in honor and memory of King D. João V, who authorized its construction, it was completed in 1728. It operated as a University Library from 1777 until the first half of the 20th century. In its interior there are about 60 thousand volumes, dating from the16th century to the 18th century, of the most varied themes that, even today, can be consulted. In addition to being a research site, the space is also frequently used for concerts, exhibitions and other cultural events.
